Health tips for your K9

Dr. Karen Becker Explains Pyometra

Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that can affect female dogs. It is characterized by an infection in the uterus, leading to the accumulation of pus. This condition typically occurs in intact, older female dogs, usually a few weeks after their heat cycle.

  1. Vaginal Discharge: A pus-like discharge from the vulva is a common symptom. The discharge may vary in color, consistency, and odor.
  2. Increased Thirst and Urination: Dogs with pyometra often exhibit increased thirst and may urinate more frequently.
  3. Lethargy and Depression: Infected dogs may appear lethargic, depressed, and have a decreased appetite.
  4. Swollen Abdomen: In some cases, the abdomen may become distended or swollen due to the enlarged uterus.
  5. Fever: Dogs with pyometra may have an elevated body temperature.

Dr Becker speaks on raw diet

Raw diets for dogs, also known as raw feeding or the BARF diet (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food), have gained popularity among pet owners in recent years. This feeding approach involves providing dogs with uncooked, fresh, and minimally processed ingredients, resembling what their ancestors would have consumed in the wild. Advocates of raw diets claim numerous benefits, including improved digestion, healthier skin and coat, increased energy levels, and better dental health. However, it's essential to thoroughly understand the concept and potential considerations before implementing a raw diet for your furry friend.

Dr Karen Becker discusses Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a common gastrointestinal problem that can affect dogs of all ages and breeds. It is characterized by loose, watery stools and can be caused by various factors, including dietary indiscretion, infections, food allergies, or underlying health conditions. While occasional bouts of diarrhea may resolve on their own, persistent or severe diarrhea should be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for diarrhea in dogs can help ensure the well-being of your furry companion.
